May 15 – International Climate Day

At this landmark event, representatives from more than 180 countries signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to prevent the harmful impacts of human activity on the climate system.
Today, climate change has evolved into a global environmental crisis. In particular, Central Asia has experienced a temperature rise of 1.5°C over the past 30 years—twice the global average. Over the last 50–60 years, the region’s glacier area has shrunk by 30 percent as a result of climate change. This has led to serious consequences, including glacier retreat, water scarcity, soil degradation, and an increased risk of natural disasters.
Uzbekistan is actively implementing a range of initiatives aimed at mitigating the negative impacts of climate change. At the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29) held in Baku, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that the main objective under the Paris Agreement is to prevent a sharp rise in regional temperatures and keep warming within 1.5–2°C by the end of this century.
The country is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030, with plans to strengthen these commitments by 2050. Uzbekistan also aims to increase the share of green energy to 40%, while developing clusters for electric vehicle and green hydrogen production, and constructing large-scale solar and wind power hubs. As part of the nationwide initiative "Yashil Makon" (Green Space), efforts are also underway to expand green areas throughout the country. Additionally, the Climate Forum held in Samarkand on April 4–5 this year served as an important platform for finding effective solutions to the challenges posed by climate change.
In addition, a National Centre on Climate Change was established under the Ministry of Ecology. The Centre coordinates issues of mitigation and adaptation to climate change in Uzbekistan, monitors the implementation of Uzbekistan's obligations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, as well as coordinates the activities of the Green Cities project (implementation of environmental master plans for cities and regions, monitoring their implementation and compiling environmental ratings of cities) and performs other tasks.
