The brown bear is classified as a vulnerable species with a wide but fragmented range. It is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and Appendix I of CITES. In the 1970s and 1980s, the population in the Western Tien Shan was estimated at 200 to 220 individuals. Thanks to conservation measures, the population has stabilized. According to the results of the spring census conducted from April 30 to May 1, 2025, 26 Tien Shan brown bears were recorded in the Zaamin State Nature Reserve.
For reference: The Zaamin State Nature Reserve was established on June 5, 1928, in the Zaamin and Bakhmal districts of the Jizzakh region. The reserve is home to 149 species of animals, 17 of which are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan. Among the most frequently encountered species are the Tien Shan brown bear, the Turkestan lynx and the Siberian ibex.
